• Abstract

In debates regarding global food security, solutions come at different scales, including global, national, and local. With increasing economic globalization, powerful transnational seed businesses seek to expand the reach of their seed and input technologies. However, there has also been much concern regarding the power of transnational seed businesses. On the one hand, peasant and small farmer movements have raised concerns about the power of these seed companies in China (see http://www.shiwuzq.com/) and abroad (see http://viacampesina.org/en/). On the other hand, prominent national academics and policymakers in China have also raised concerns about the power of these transnational seed companies in relation to China’s seed industry. My talk will introduce the similarities and conflict between national food security and local food sovereignty in the context of economic globalization in the agricultural sector.
